Explanation of the Toxic Metal Elimination Diet:
This diet was designed to contain many sulfur containing amino acids as well as food and spices that increase bile flow and liver function.
• 1 cup cottage cheese contains 1 gram of the sulfur containing amino acid methionine
• Other good food sources of methionine are beans, eggs, onions, garlic, lentils soybeans, yogurt, fish and meat
• Methionine is needed to make the sulfur amino acid taurine
• Taurine is found mainly in fish and animal protein, particularly organ meats
• Eating liver provides taurine and biotin. Biotin assists in the metabolism of fats and proteins
• Biotin is a critical part of glucokinase, the enzyme involved in the utilization of glucose
• Sulfur is a component of insulin. A lack of nutritional sulfur can result in low insulin production and poor carbohydrate metabolism.
• Taurine is an important component of bile, needed for the removal of toxic metals
• Dandelion and turmeric increase bile flow
• The body also converts methionine into the sulfur amino acid cysteine which makes the great glutathione
• Cysteine and methionine can create the antioxidant lipoic acid
• Good food sources of cysteine include: onions, garlic, yogurt, and wheat germ
• Methionine increases the production of choline, important for liver function
• Eggs are an excellent source of choline (lecithin) and sulfur
• The word "lecithin" is derived from the Greek word lekithos, meaning "yolk"
• One large egg contains 2 ½ grams of lecithin and ¼ gram cholesterol (this in 10x more lecithin than cholesterol)
The minimum requirements for total sulfur-containing amino acids have been reported by researchers to be as high as 1400 mg. per day but will vary in relation to diet, age and sex.
